Ian Russell Solid Bag Ronnie Rig Bundle

You might have used Solid Bags before, and you’ve almost certainly heard of the Ronnie Rig – so how about combining the two? This Terminal Tackle Bundle is based on a popular tactic used by OMC’s very own Ian Russell – an absolute carp-catching machine. Seeing the success other anglers were having with Solid Bag tactics a few years ago, but sceptical about how effective they were once disturbed by fish, Ian decided to get on board – with his own twist: put a Ronnie Rig inside!

The thinking is that not only will you get better hooking of the fish from the off, but should the bag be dramatically disturbed, and you’re left fishing a single, you’re now fishing a far more effective single!

“I caught well with this tactic from the off and never really looked back. Put them on fish and they will catch – it really is as simple as that!”
— Ian Russell

Bundle Includes:

  • Size 4 Colne-V Needle Point Hooks
  • 25lb Ammo Braid
  • Vitabitz Size 11 Spinner Ring Swivel
  • Vitabitz Micro Ring Swivel Size 18
  • Vitabitz Shrink Tube Green 2.4mm
  • Dog Bone Sinkers Large
  • Long Distance Hookbeads
  • Fade Medium Solid Bags
  • OMC Wrapping Paper

How to Tie:

  1. Slide the Vitabitz Shrink Tubing onto the Colne-V Hook before mounting it onto the Vitabitz Spinner Swivel. (Ian likes to cut the ring off this swivel, but that’s optional.)
  2. Use a lighter to heat the Shrink Tube so it shrinks down around the swivel.
  3. Manipulate the pair so the hook sits at an angle. Ian likes this rig to be very aggressive.
  4. Slide on the Vitabitz Micro Ring Swivel and lock it in place with the Long Distance Hookbead. Ian prefers this positioned opposite the barb of the hook.
  5. Connect the Spinner Swivel to a short 4-inch length of Ammo Braid by forming an Overhand Loop Knot. This allows the Ronnie section freedom to spin.
  6. Slide on the Dog Bone Sinker to weigh down your pop-up (add additional putty if necessary), pushing it up tight to the knot. Then tie another Overhand Loop at the other end of the hooklink.
  7. Ian slides on a small sleeve or piece of Shrink Tube over the hooklink loop before connecting it to the Q/C swivel on the lead system. However, this can also be done via a loop-to-loop connection direct to the swivel too.
  8. Floss on your hookbait.
  9. Start loading your Fade Solid Bag. Ian likes to put the hookbait in first and the lead second.
  10. Tap it down compactly before licking and sticking the top of the bag. Don’t forget to fold in the corners to make the bag more aerodynamic.
  11. Ian then makes a big hole in the front of the bag to allow air to escape. This prevents the bag from exploding on the bottom and chucking bait everywhere.
  12. Ian likes to add additional liquids at this stage.
  13. Your Ronnie Rig Solid Bag is complete – ready to catch a big old carp!

“A simple presentation that just seems to work for me everywhere I take it. I’m sure you’ve seen Ronnies before, and I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of Solid Bags tied too. Try combining them this season and hopefully it’ll catch you plenty.”
— Ian Russell
